Darlene Kay Ash

July 19, 1949 - June 23, 2019

Darlene Kay Ash, 69 formerly of East Liverpool, Ohio passed away Sunday, June 23, 2019 at Park Center Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Boardman, Ohio following an eight month illness.
She was born July 19, 1949 in East Liverpool, the daughter of the late Charles R. Ash and Vera M. (Timmons) Ash.

Living most of her life in the area, Darlene graduated from East Liverpool High School in 1967, and worked at the Homer Laughlin Pottery from 1968-1969. She also attended Kent State University and graduated March 1972, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology. She spoke most fondly of her academic and campus life experiences while studying at the home of the Golden Flashes.

Darlene began her work in child welfare with Mahoning County Children Services October 18, 1972, and remained with her CSB family until her retirement December 31, 2003, giving 31 years of service to children and families. She also shared a passion for animal welfare, and provided pet food and straw during the winter months to needy families in East Liverpool with pets.

Darlene loved the art of cross stitching and crocheting, and enjoyed crocheting uniquely designed gifts. She took great pleasure attending craft shows and garage sales collecting stuffed bears to donate to select crochet groups to outfit and give to hospitalized children. And of course, Darlene was known to be an avid reader, and loved to dine with her friends and share her dry wit and points of view.

Darlene is survived by her brother, Charles R. Ash Jr., nieces Jessica Ash (Justin Hare) and Elizabeth Ash (Eric Davis), nephew Brian (Jill) Ash, great niece Sophia Hare, great nephew Jonathan Rost and many cousins, as well as her “band of sisters” Karla Edwards, Anna Marie Jones, Beth Lenzi, Lenore Blanton, Cathy Gagliardi, and honorary member, Danny Thomas, who provided additional support to Darlene during her illness.

It was Darlene’s wishes that no calling hours or services be held. The Martin MacLean Altmeyer Funeral Home in Calcutta has been entrusted with her arrangements. Donations in her memory may be made to: Kent State University, P.O. Box 5190 in Kent, Ohio 44242 or www.kentedu/advancement/give-online-now, or Mahoning County Humane Society, P.O.
